Ciudad Encantada
|
To the north and east of Cuenca lie vast mountains of forest and pasture scarred by deep gorges. About 20 miles into the region is one of the most unique preserves. Apparently during the last ice age a glacier, retreating down into the valley, scoured the limestone into fantastic shapes and canyons. It has come to be known as the enchanted city "Ciudad Encantada". When we arrived, and we almost turned back because of time constraints, we were astonished by the physical beauty of the place. We had only a few hours to explore and regretted that we did not have days! Truly one of the highlights of the entire Spain trip! I hope the images capture some sense of the magic of this place.

The combination of spectacular stone shapes, lush pasture and changing light patterns made this a surrealistic landscape. Something I might have drawn back in my youth. After the intense human pace of Madrid, Toledo and Cuenca this gentle respite was much welcomed. |
