Segovia

Segovia was by far the prettiest of the Spanish cities I visited. It is situated on a high rocky spur and surrounded by the Rio Clamores and Rio Eresma. Upon approach from the south the Roman aqueduct is the first architectural element encountered. It dates from the 1st century AD and, incredibly, was in use until the late 19th century. It is a marvel to walk among the arches and view it from different angles all the while contemplating it's tremendous age.

The Alcazar (castle) is spectacularly sited rising sheer above a rocky hillside with a number of gabled roofs, turrets and battlements. Quite the fairy tale castle.

The cathedral was restored between 1525 and 1678. It is an imposing Gothic structure with pinnacles, flying buttresses, tower and dome. It dominates most views of the town. The interior space is bright with enormous vaulted ceilings, statuary and graceful iron work. It is considered one of the finest in Europe. |
