Toledo
![]() Toledo impressed me as the Spanish city that has most closely maintained it's medieval character. This small city is positioned on a hill surrounded on three sides by the deep Tagus River gorge with the city walls and gates remaining mostly intact. The streets are narrow and cobblestone, winding up and down the hill. Shops, restaurants and bars occupy every street. Over the centuries Toledo has been settled or occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, Christians, Muslims and Jews |
![]() Delightfully Toledo is a walking city, day or night. When the sun sets lights illuminate the walls and ancient architecture. The view from the surrounding hills is quite dramatic with the city rising above the gorge |

The cathedral of Toledo is quite impressive, crowded in by the surrounding homes and shops. It took three centuries to build beginning in 1226. As seen above, from many locations the Gothic tower imposes itself on the street scene. It is a massive structure.
There are several gates into the city. This, a view of the old East Gate, is seen through the moorish arch of another doorway in the wall of Toledo. This architectural influence is seen throughout the city.
